The National Paint & Coatings Association (NPCA) announced in a May 31 Press Release, that the Girl Scouts of the Lenni-Lenape Girl Scout Council received a Picture It Painted Award for their camp clean-up project. For more than 20 years the NPCA has contributed paint, painting supplies, and funding to public service projects that renew and repair community facilities. Each year worthwhile projects receive the Picture It Painted award. This is a national program and available to Scout Units and other groups throughout the Country.

To find out more, you can visit the NPCA web site. You will find ahigh-level descriptionof the Picture it Painted program. While there you may want to download their e-publication title "Preventing Childhood Lead Exposure: A Guide to Online and Offline Resources and Information About Lead Paint." This a free book filled with information about how to test for lead in paint, what to do about it, and where to find more resources on the subject.

An example of the type of community project sponsored by the NPCA is an annual one called D.C. Cares .  The pictures below were taken during this year's work.

This year over 3,000 volunteers joined together on May 20 to renew dozens of facilities throughout Greater Washington D.C. Mary Shomon, the PIP Outreach Coordinator, said, "Benjamin Moore paint, donated via the Picture it Painted program, was used as part of this important effort. Projects tackled by the D.C. Cares team included the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Anthony Bowen YMCA facility, numerous elementary schools, recreation centers, the Children's Studio Public Charter School plus a number of other charter schools, Boys and Girls Clubs, parks, low-income housing facilities, and many other worthwhile programs."

Mary also said that the application form for the award changes a little each year (and the form for 2001 has not yet been designed). However, you can view a sample of the Year 2000 Formonline. If you want more information on the 2001 program send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to:

You can reach the organization by phone at 202-462-6272.

Many communities have benefited from the good will of the members of the NPCA. Life Scouts who plan projects which require these types of supplies should certainly contact NPCA members in their home towns.
